Hagatha was a witch.
Background[]
Life[]
Hagatha was an incredibly beautiful woman, but she had a rather enormous passion for witchcraft, especially dark magic, guiding her sister Hagetta down the path of magic. However, her excessive and reckless use of dark magic began to change her until she became a homely old woman.
One day a young girl named Evly arrived with a mirror at her door asking for help. She explained that her fiancé had been locked in a magic mirror and asked Hagatha if she could free him or if she knew who could. Hagatha sadly replied that her magic was not strong enough to free the young man from the mirror, which greatly devastated the poor girl. The witch, taking pity on her, told her that although she could not free her lover, she could help her with her pain. Through a powerful dark spell, Hagatha tore out Evly's heart and transformed it into stone, which deprived the woman of any emotion unless she touched that stone heart.
Some time later Hagatha began to insist that her sister practiced dark magic, but Hagetta was not interested in practicing that type of magic so both sisters took different paths and separated.
Meeting John Bailey[]
A few years later, a man named John came to his home looking for information about The Wishing Spell. In exchange for some coins, Hagatha agreed to tell him about the spell and through a magic potion he revealed to him the objects that make it up.
Meeting Ezmia and Death[]
Hagatha met a weakened Ezmia, unaware of the bad reputation the fairy had earned, took her to her home and cared for her, taking her as her apprentice. According to Ezmia, she treated her quite badly and did not care about her until one day Hagatha told her about the Spell of the Seven Deadly Sins.
One day, Ezmia, fed up with Hagatha's poor treatment of her, took advantage of the fact that she was distracted, and pushed her into an ancient pit of thorns and then cast a spell on the thorny pods so that they would grow uncontrollably, killing Hagatha. Everyone who heard about her death thought that she had been the one who cursed those vines and not Ezmia.
The Wishing Spell[]
At first the twins wanted to find Hagatha to help them return home, but unfortunately they found out that she had died.
The Enchantress Returns[]
Hagatha appears as a spirit to warn the twins about the Enchantress's plan as well as telling them about the Seven Deadly Sins spell.
Appearance[]
"She looked like a human tree stump. She was short and wore a brown hooded cloak. Deep wrinkles circled her face, and one of her eyes was squinted. Her nose was one of the smallest I had ever seen and was neighbored by a gigantic mole."[1]
Hagatha was a short, ugly old woman with wrinkles all over her face, a squinting left eye, an extremely small nose, and a huge mole next to it.
According to her sister Hagetta, Hagatha once was very beautiful ("Men traveled across kingdoms to woo and court her."),but the use of dark magic changed her appearance.[2]
Personality[]
Hagatha was a wise witch, but quite distant and grumpy. As a young woman, she was quite distracted and naive.
She is described by Ezmia as a cruel person, treating her horribly and taking advantage of her. Ezmia tells Alex and Conner she eventually stood up to her and pushed her into the Thornbush Pit[3] The Traveling Tradesman claims she died simply by falling into the pit, but not after she called for help for days.[4] It is unclear if these two versions are incongruent because of a continuity error, or if the Traveling Tradesman simply heard about Hagatha's death and made up his own "sensational" version of the story to tell.
Powers and Abilities[]
It is unknown how powerful Hagatha was as a witch, but it is known that she was very knowledgeable in multiple very powerful secret dark spells such as the heart separation spell and the Seven Deadly Sins spell.
Relationships[]
Hagetta[]
Hagatha has a younger sister called Hagetta, whom she taught about witchcraft. They parted ways shortly before Hagatha died because Hagetta wasn't interested in dark magic.[5]
Evly[]
Hagatha is the one who cuts out Evly's heart and turns it to stone so she doesn't need to feel her heartbreak.[6]
Ezmia[]
After Ezmia is poisoned by Evly, Hagatha finds her and nurses her back to health, taking her on as an apprentice.
